Wheel Well Trim

Okay, to quote Eddie Murphy, “If I don't get some trim soon I'm gonna' explode!” Well it was time for my Charger to get some trim so I had a dilemma. I had all the original wheel well trim and that is what was used to fit the wheel well openings but they were in sad shape. I thought I would get the repops and see what they were like. My first impression was they were very thin when compared to the originals but that is a blessing/curse when trying to fit wheel well trim. The best way is to use clothespins and little clamps to hold it on until you get it all centered.

Keep fitting the trim then clamp it back on to see what it looks like. I had to take it on and off a few times and bend and mold it then clamp it back in until it fit smooth to the contours of the opening. Once you are satisfied with the fit start at the middle and drill the top, center hole and screw it down. Take car not to tighten the screw down too tight, as it will distort the trim. After the center one is on, move out one hole and put them in and so forth.

Here you can see how tight it should fit to the opening. If you had to do surgery on your quarters like I did, this is where the many hours of fitting the panels before welding them in will really pay off.

The yellow arrow shows you where to start with the drilling and screwing process and the purple arrows show where you need to work the repop trim to get it to fit the contours of the body. Since the trim is thin this is not too hard but major care must be taken not to crease the trim, so I used a rubber hammer just to nudge them into shape.

These were the areas where a little tickling was needed but the trim yielded to my will (and rubber hammer) and laid in tight. A little pressure on the trim while drilling the hole and tightening the screw will hold it right where you want it to be.

The trim sure does look good with the redlines and F8 steelies. I hope the front trim works as well!
