This is kind of a sick thing but now I am going to spray nasty, drippy, smelly tar undercoating on my fresh new paint. The wheel wells on Chargers were coated with a tar undercoat that was sprayed on at the factory in a pretty messy way. The undercoating for the front was sprayed after the fenders were put on but we will do it in sections to make it less messy. Here I am masking off the holes in the wheel well to avoid spray into the motor compartment.

Don't forget to use paper and a drop cloth to catch all the drips & over spray. The undercoating will clean off the paint with Prepsol but lets try not to get it on in the first place.

Here is the area from the engine side showing the masking tape. A quick word on tape if I may, spend the extra money and but the good 3-M or Norton tape. It really makes a difference over the hardware store smegma. It comes of the roll nice, leaves no residue, doesn't tear in half and overall it just plain works well.

Okay, here is the deal. The undercoating in a can is okay but will not give you the real rough texture you can get with this type of gun. These are called Schutz guns and they work great. The only problem is Eastwood and others are getting $80-$90 for them and I just couldn't bring myself to pay that. Then Harbor Freight Tools steps up and offers this beauty for around $14.00 and it worked great. I got this and a case of 4-quarts of undercoat for around $60.00 and it has been enough to do two Chargers. Put a regulator on it and run it at around 10 lbs pressure and it will sputter out giving the rough texture that the factory got. Practice a few times on some cardboard or something first to get the hang of it. Please don't forget to clean the gun well after each use and wear old clothes!

Yikes! What a mess it makes but that is okay just make sure you have even coverage and let it set up a little between coats. I used three coats over about an hour and was rewarded with a nice, rich texture.

Here you can see the pattern I was going for. A lot of spikes and ripples just like 1969 all over again. Feather the coat away from the control arm area as this was not coated from the factory.
