Transmission & Clutch

When I got the car it still had the numbers matching A-833 Hemi trans in the car. Someone had added a Hurst straight-line shifter but the big chunk of iron was hanging from the tranny mount. We took it out and opened it up and all was well inside so a little cleaning and some new gaskets and we were good to go. The outside needed a lot of cosmetics to make it right though. The other cool thing I started to find as I cleaned off the rust was the largest collection of inspection marks I have seen on any part of this car. Here you can see the numbers pad, a large white X and a swath of green on the casting numbers.

Here is a pretty good look at the VIN number stamping. It is interesting to not that it seemed that these numbers were hammered into the metal one at a time as the spacing is uneven and some are very light and hard to read.

On the shifter side a lot of grease and nastiness awaited me. The purple arrows point to three clips that keep the back-up light switch wire out of the shift rods. A lot of mineral spirits and wire brushing will remove the crud.

This is the backup light switch and the speedometer gear housing. You can check the switch with a meter to see if it works or you can pick up a new one. Mine had a cracked plastic housing or I would have went with it, as the replacements are visually a little different. The speedo housing came out and the correct gear for the 4.10 gears was in there.

After a lot of wire brushing and spirits (for degreasing not drinking) the rusty case is starting to show it's ugly surface. On the side case and on the tail shaft I have replaced the bolts with ones to hold it together while I clean and paint it. The originals are cleaned up and given a coat of clear so they look natural like they were when new.

Here I uncovered a white daub under the side plug and a blue daub under the 3-4 shifter pivot. No clue what they mean but they are cataloged and will be reproduced when it is done.

A big green mark was placed under the reverse pivot.
